Portrait of the English biologist and archaeologist John Lubbock,Baron Avebury,(1834- 1913). Lubbock studied the social life of some insects and devised the Lubbock nest,a movable glass-sided container,in which he could analyse colonies of insects. He also introduced for the first time the use of obstacles and mazes to test the intelligence of some species. With such devices he showed that ants recognise colours and found bee's colour preferences. Lubbock was also an active archaelogist and an exponent of Darwin's ideas. In 1855 he found the first fossil musk ox in England which gave early evidence of an ice age | |
