Portrait of Sir Norman Lockyer (1836-1920),British astronomer and discoverer of helium. Lockyer started his career as a civil servant,later turning to astronomy. He used recently- introduced methods of spectral analysis to study the Sun. He discovered an unknown element in the Sun by such spectrographic analysis,naming it helium (from Greek helios = Sun). In later life,he founded the Science Museum in London,and the revered scientific journal Nature which he edited for over 50 years | |
