Sir John Kendrew (1917-1997),British biochemist. Kendrew graduated from Cambridge in 1939 and spent World War Two in the Ministry of Aircraft Production. In 1946 he joined Max Perutz at Cambridge, where he studied the crystalline structure of myoglobin, the muscle protein, using X-ray diffraction techniques. In 1953 Perutz discovered that adding heavy metal atoms to proteins improved resolution. Kendrew adapted this method for his work with myoglobin and by 1959 had produced a structure for the protein. Kendrew and Perutz shared the 1962 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their work | |
