Theodor Kaluza. Historical portrait of the German mathematician Theodor Kaluza (1885-1945). On gaining his PhD in 1910,Kaluza worked in relative obscurity until Einstein recognised the importance of his attempts to unify his own theory of gravity with Maxwell's theory of light. Kaluza proposed a fifth dimension in which these two theories became unified, publishing his work in 1921. Despite Einstein's support,he was not promoted to professor until 1929. As refined by Klein, his theory is still used in theoretical physics | |
