David Hanson (born 1969),US robot designer, holding a Frubber mask. Hanson trained as a sculptor and artist but in 2003,formed Hanson Robotics in order to create robots with realistic facial expressions and human-like responses. His creations include a walking, talking Albert Einstein (the Albert-Hubo) robot and various talking robot heads. Hanson has also invented a flesh-like rubber skin, called 'Frubber',that covers the robot faces. Frubber is flexible and light enough to be mechanically controlled by servo motors, resulting in life-like facial expressions that use minimal battery power. Hanson's robots contain motion detecting and speech recognition sensors linked to an external computer. This enables the robots to respond to environmental stimuli. Photographed in 2007 | |
