Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895),English biologist. Huxley was a strong advocate of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. He was often its main supporter in scientific debates,as Darwin shunned publicity. In 1860 Huxley presented Darwin's theory at a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science at Oxford,where he faced an ardent opponent,Bishop Samuel Wilberfoce. Huxley won the day by confirming that humans were primates. He turned the evolution debate into one of science rather than emotion. Huxley invented the word 'agnostic' as a means of expressing his religious beliefs
