David E. Hughes,US inventor
David E. Hughes (1831-1900),US inventor,electrician and musician. Hughes was born in London on 16 May 1831,but emigrated with his family to the USA in 1838. He was an accomplished musician and reputedly became Professor of Music at a college at the age of only 19. Simultaneously he studied the physical sciences and held a Chair in Natural Philosophy. In 1855,Hughes invented a machine for printing telegraph messages,which became widely used throughout the US and Europe. He also invented a carbon microphone. This artwork was published in 'La Telegraphie Historique' (History of Telegraphy) by Alexis Belloc in 1888
