John P Holland (1840-1915),Irish-American inventor of the modern submarine,peering from the conning tower of his Holland VI craft. Holland was an Irish nationalist whose passion for submarines was born of a desire to be able to attack the powerful British fleet. He developed the Holland VI in 1900,and sold it to the US government. It was 16 metres long and had a top speed of 8 knots (around 15 kilometres per hour) | |
