Liz Harrington,British molecular biologist, with a video microscope used to study apoptosis. Apoptosis is the genetically-programmed tendency of cells to die. A member of Dr Gerard Evan's team at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund,London,Harrington has studied cell death using time-lapse video microscopy. It has been discovered that apoptosis depends on the action of two groups of cytokines on a certain gene, called c-myc. The first group prompts both cell proliferation and apoptosis, but a second group (called IGF-1) overrides the apoptosis prompt. Many cancerous cells have mutated c-myc,which are thus immune from IGF-1. Photographed in 1994 | |
