Sir Fred Hoyle. Portrait of Sir Fred Hoyle British astrophysicist (1915-2001). Educated at Cambridge University,Hoyle was one of the first to adopt the steady-state theory for the origin of the universe. The theory assumes the universe is homogeneous & isotropic in space,& is unchanging with time. Expansion of the universe is explained by the continuous creation of matter to maintain a mean mass density. Newer evidence has debunked this theory. Hoyle also showed how elements heavier than hydrogen and helium could be created by nuclear synthesis in stars. Professor of Astronomy at Cambridge until 1973,Hoyle has writ- en a prolific number of books, lectures & papers | |
