Fabrizio Gagliardi, head of CERN's Datagrid project. This project aims to utilise the power of hundreds of computers to solve complex problems in particle physics. The computers will form a Grid,a network of computers that can share processing power. AT CERN,the European Particle Physics laboratory, the Grid will be used to analyse the results from the new Large Hadron Collider. This instrument will smash subatomic particles together and study their debris. In the wider world,Grids can be used for solving problems in aerodynamics, medicine, pharmaceutics and many other fields. The processing power can be accessed through any desktop computer. Photographed in 2003 | |
