Gilbert's magnet book. Title page of William Gilbert's De Magnete (Concerning Magnets),published in London in 1600. This was the first great physical book published in England. It contained his studies of magnetism and electricity (a term coined based on his research),and he theorised that the two forces were closely related. He also considered the Earth to be a spherical magnet, and used the attraction of magnets to it to determine latitude at sea. The unit of magnetomotive power, the gilbert,is named in William Gilbert's honour. He lived from 1544- 1603 | |
