Asa Gray (1810-1888),American botanist. Gray trained initially as a doctor,obtaining his M.D. in 1831. However,his real interest lay in botany,which he pursued successfully,being made Professor of Natural History at Harvard University,USA in 1842. Throughout his career Gray travelled frequently to Europe to examine plant specimens. In 1851 he met Charles Darwin,who became a regular correspondent.
