Frederick Guthrie. Historical portrait of the British physicist and chemist Frederick Guthrie (1833-1886). Guthrie is best known for his accidental discovery of the mustard gas molecule (1,1-thiobis (2-chloroethane)),which attacks the moist surfaces of the body, causing blistering and eventually death. Mustard gas was extensively used in warfare throughout the 20th century, most notably during the First World War. Guthrie was also professor of physics at the Royal College of Science in London, and founded the Physical Society in London in 1874,which later became the Institute of Physics | |
