Leo Frobenius,German anthropologist
Leo Frobenius (1873-1938),German anthropologist. Frobenius made many trips to Africa,travelling to the Congo in 1904,and the Sudan and north-eastern Africa until 1918. From 1920,he was a professor in Munich,and then at Frankfurt University. He was part of the academic school that attempted to reconstruct the worldview of hunter-gatherers. He also built up a collection of nearly 5000 prehistoric African statues. Frobenius is said to have opposed the colonial viewpoint,instead describing Africans as "civilised to the marrow of their bones".
