Professor Peter Fromherz, neurochip researcher. A neurochip contains nerve cells (neurons) and conventional silicon circuitry. Fromherz created a circuit in which a signal was carried from a transistor to a neuron, from this cell to an adjacent neuron, and then to another transistor. This experiment proved that communication between neuronal and silicon circuitry is feasible. Behind Fromherz is a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a nerve cell on a chip. Fromherz works at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Martinsried,Germany. Photographed in 2001 | |
