Sir John Fowler. Historical portrait of the English civil engineer Sir John Fowler (1817- 1898). Fowler designed many railway bridges, including (with Benjamin Baker) the cantilever bridge over the Firth of Forth in Scotland. This 2.4 kilometre long railway bridge was the first major structure made of steel. Construction took eight years from 1882-1890. Fowler also worked on extending the Metropolitan Railway in London, the world's first underground railway. He was created a baronet in 1890. Picture taken from the Illustrated London News | |
