Gabriele Falloppio or Falloppia (1523-1562),also known as Fallopius,was the leading Italian anatomist of the 16th century. Born in Modena,he studied under Vesalius before becoming professor of anatomy at Pisa in 1548 and Padua in 1551. He discovered the Fallopian tubes,which he described as "trumpets of the uterus",named the vagina,and was the first to describe the anatomy of the clitoris.
