Edward Forbes. Portrait of Edward Forbes (1815- 1854),British naturalist. Forbes studied medicine at Edinburgh but soon became more interested in natural history. He travelled widely across Europe and the Middle East collecting plants and animals, studying the migration habits and the social life of different species. Whilst collecting molluscs he produced evidence of ocean sedimentation. He began a systematic classification of starfish. He proved that marine life existed not just in surface waters by dredging a starfish from a depth of 400m in the Mediterranean Sea | |
