Portrait of Robert FitzRoy,RN (1805-1865),British hydrographer and meteorologist. FitzRoy was educated at the Royal Naval College at Portsmouth. He commanded HMS Beagle during both of its survey voyages to South America (1828 and 1831). During the second of these,FitzRoy took Charles Darwin as the ship's naturalist. His narrative of the voyages included "The Voyage of the Beagle",written by Darwin. FitzRoy served as an MP from 1841-43,then as Governor of New Zealand until 1845. In 1854 he took up the post of meteorological statist,organising a number of observation posts and the publication of storm warnings. He committed suicide in 1865 | |
