Portrait of the British naturalist Edward Forbes (1815-1854). Forbes studied medicine at Edinburgh but soon became more interested in natural history and subsequently obtained a lectureship at the Royal School of Mines,Edinburgh. He travelled widely across Europe and the region bordering the Eastern Mediterranean collecting flora and fauna, studying the migration habits and the social life of different species. He dismantled the contemporary belief that marine life existed only near the sea surface by dredging a starfish from a depth of 400m in the Mediterranean Sea | |
