Sir Alexander Fleming's laboratory at St Mary's Hospital,Paddington,as it was in 1928 when he discovered the penicillin fungus. A Scottish bacteriologist,Fleming was born August 6th 1881 & died March 11th 1955. In 1928 he discovered that secretions from a fungus called Penicillium notatum destroyed colonies of the bacterium Staphylococcus sp. The secretion was named an antibiotic.
