Portrait of John Flamsteed,English astronomer,born on August 19th 1646 in Derby,Derbyshire & died on 31st December 1719 in Greenwich,near London. Flamsteed,among others,petitioned King Charles 11,to build a national observatory in order to improve navigational procedures. The observatory was built at Greenwich & Flamsteed was appointed to head it as the first Astronomer Royal in 1675.
