Sir Arthur Eddington. Historical portrait of the British astrophysicist Sir Arthur Eddington (1882- 1944). Eddington pioneered the study of internal stellar structure. He theorised an upper limit on the mass of a star and also discovered the mass- luminosity relationship. This relates the intrinsic brightness of a star to its mass. In 1919 he made observations of stars near the sun during a solar eclipse. The results were hailed as confirmation of the gravitational bending of the light from these stars (as predicted by Einstein's General Theory of Relativity). Other experiments have confirmed this effect, though Eddington's data is now disputed | |
