Francis Egerton. Engraving of Francis Egerton,3rd Duke of Bridgewater (1736-1803),British canal builder. Thought as a child to be unintelligent,Egerton spent his youth socialising before concentrating on his business interests. Egerton commissioned the construction of a canal to carry coal from his mines in Worsley to Manchester. The 16 kilometre (km) canal was extended in 1782 by another 48km to reach Liverpool. Egerton was ecc- entric, refusing to read books, dressing untidily and continually inspecting his canal. The canal's success prompted large-scale construction of waterways, providing the transport structure needed to support the Industrial Revolution | |
