Epicurus. Engraving of a Classical Greek marble bust of the philosopher Epicurus (c.341-270 BC),who founded Epicureanism. Epicurus established a successful school of philosophy in Athens in about 305 BC,where he lived a life of great temperance and simplicity. His followers believed that plea- sure (meaning freedom from pain and anxiety) is the highest good. Epicurus is said to have written over 300 scholarly volumes on varied subjects, but only fragments of his work survived. After his death the philosophy of Epicureanism continued to attract followers until the 3rd century AD. "Epi- curean" has since come to mean devoted to the indulgence of sensual pleasures | |
