Pierre Duhen. Portrait of Pierre Duhen (1861- 1916),French physicist. Duhen was a teacher and academic in several provincial establishments, notably Lille,Rennes and Bordeaux. He was a devout Catholic, and his uncompromising manner isolated him from the scientific mainstream at the time. His doctoral thesis on thermodynamics contradicted many old ideas, and was not approved. However, many of his ideas were ahead of their time, and he is regarded as an important figure in the thermodynamic field. He became more interested in the history of science, and his philosophy was that science offered a predictive aid rather than a direct explanation of the world | |
