Guillaume Duchenne. Portrait of Guillaume Benjam- in Amand Duchenne (1806-75),French physician,holding an electrode to a patient's head. Duchenne pioneered electric therapy. He studied the physiology and diseases of muscles. He did important work on poliomyelitis,locomotor ataxia and Duchenne's muscular dystrophy. He developed a method of removing small pieces of muscle (a biopsy) for microscopic examination. He never held a formal hospital appointment but worked at Salpetriere Hospital in Paris under the patronage of Charcot. Photographed in 1861 | |
