Portrait of Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802),British physician. Darwin studied medicine at Edinburgh and Cambridge, where he obtained his MB in 1755. He practiced in Lichfield, and turned down an invitation to become personal physician to King George III. As founder of the Lunar Society,he composed many writings on science, some of which were in verse. The society was eventually discredited, due mainly to its support of the American and French revolutions. Darwin's best work,"Zoonomia" of 1796,briefly proposed a theory of evolution in response to environmental pressures for the first time,a concept taken up and proved by his grandson - Charles Darwin | |
