Christopher Columbus. Statue of the Italian explo- rer Christopher Columbus (1451-1506). Columbus discovered America by mistake, thinking he was in Asia. He believed, wrongly, that Asia lay only 5000km west of Europe. After his project was rejected by the Portuguese king John II,he received Spanish backing and set off with three ships and 120 men. On 12 October 1492 he landed on a small island in the Bahamas (San Salvador),believing he had found the Indies. During three other trips he discovered the American mainland and more Caribbean islands. He died in poverty in Spain, still believing he had reached Asia. This statue is in Genoa,Italy, where he was born | |
