Harvey W. Cushing. Portrait of Harvey Williams Cushing (1869-1939),American physiologist and neurosurgeon. Cushing was a skilful surgeon who specialised in brain surgery. He pioneered several important techniques including the control of blood pressure during surgery. He improved the diagnosis,localisation and treatment of brain tumours. He studied the function and pathology of the pituitary gland at the base of the brain. He showed pituitary overactivity causes acromegaly (increased size of hands,feet and face) and underactivity causes dwarfism. A chronic wasting disease,Cushing's syndrome,which is linked with a pituitary tumour was named after him | |
