Portrait of the French zoologist Baron Georges Cuvier (1769-1832). Cuvier, together with French geologist Brongniart (1770-1847),is considered to be the founder of vertebrate palaeontology for his classification of fossil mammals and reptiles. He was a pioneer of comparative anatomy. Cuvier always attacked theories of evolution supporting instead the current theory of catastrophes. He believed that after each catastrophe, with the Biblical flood as the most recent one, life was created anew. Here, his medals include his Legion of Honour, with the additional chest medal of a Grand Officer | |
