Portrait of Girolamo Cardano,an Italian mathematician who was born in 1501 and died in 1576. Cardano published an early and important treatise on algebra, concerning the method of solving cubic equations. The work was titled Ars Magna,Milan,1545. The method was obtained from another mathematician Niccolo Tartaglia who had sworn Cardano to secrecy. Tartaglia had been credited for the work, but the question of scientific secrecy was raised. Cardano was the first to recognize the value of negative numbers & imaginary numbers. Cardano was a gambler & wrote a book on the mathematics of chance | |
