As the professor of surgery at the University of Vienna,he made advances in abdominal surgery, especially in the use of antiseptics. This enabled him to carry out operations that had previously been too dangerous. He was the first surgeon to remove a section of the oesophagus and to carry out a complete laryngectomy (removal of the larynx). Billroth was also the first to remove the lower half of the stomach and rejoin the remaining section to the small intestine.
