Marc Isambard Brunel (1769-1849),French engineer. In 1793 Brunel fled France as a royalist refugee from the upheavals following the French Revolution of 1789. In 1799 he settled in England. There he patented production techniques for naval equipment and introduced mass production methods. He was the engineer for the first Thames Tunnel (upper left),the first tunnel to be constructed using a gradually advancing shield at the tunnel face. He was knighted in 1841.
