Edward Emerson Barnard. Portrait of Edward Emerson Barnard (1857-1923),American astronomer. Barnard was originally an amateur astronomer. He was appointed professor at Chicago University's Yerkes observatory in 1895. By completing a large scale photographic survey of the sky,he found over 300 dark nebulae (clouds of dust in space). These block starlight from the Milky Way,and beforehand were thought to be areas lacking in stars. In 1892 he discovered a fifth moon of Jupiter,Almathea, the first discovered since Galileo's work. He also plotted the course of a red dwarf star which exhibits a large motion across the sky,now called Barnard's Star | |
