Portrait of the British anatomist and anthro- pologist,George Busk (1807-86). George Busk played an important role in bringing to scientific attention the discovery of Neanderthal man. He was an early supporter of Darwin's views, published in "The Origin of Species" (1859),that humans are related to primates. Following the finding of the remains of Homo neanderthalensis in Germany, the scientist Schaaffhausen published a report on this find which was translated into English by George Busk in 1861. In his translation,Busk appended his own remarks that Neanderthal's skull resembled the gorilla and chimpanzee. Since then, the issue of human-primate origins has been hotly debated | |
