Portrait of Clarissa Harlowe ('Clara') Barton (1821-1912),American nurse and medical reformer. Barton was born at Oxford,Massachusetts. As a nurse,she served in the Union Army during the American Civil War of 1861-5. Barton was instrumental in bringing improvements to patient care,most particularly in the use of sterile equipment and procedures. She was also the founder of the US affiliate of the International Red Cross. Barton died at Glen Echo,Maryland,at the age of 91 | |
