Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922) photographed with Helen Keller (seated) and Anne Sullivan. Bell was the third generation of his family to be involved with speech therapy. His grandfather was an actor who studied and taught elocution,and his father was a speech therapist. Bell continued the family tradition,eventually becoming professor of vocal physiology at Boston. Helen Keller (1880- 1968) lost her sight and hearing following an illness at the age of 19 months. Despite this,she learnt to read,write and talk from Anne Sullivan.
