Portrait of the Swiss mathematician Daniel Bernouilli,1700-1782. The Bernouilli family produced eleven substantial mathematicians in four generations. Daniel studied medicine in Switzerland and Germany and qualified in 1724. In the same year he published some major mathematical work and was appointed professor of mathematics at St. Petersburg in Russia in 1725. He returned to Basel in 1733 and worked on trigonometry, calculus, probability, and Boyle's law,and he applied Newton's ideas on force to fluids. He developed Bernouilli's principle, whereby fluids flowing through pipes of changing diameter are at lower pressure when flowing through a narrow part | |
