Potrait of Niels Bohr (1885-1962),Danish physicist and discoverer of electron orbitals. Bohr was educated at the University of Copenhagen, receiving his doctorate in 1911. Whilst at Cambridge in 1912-16,he proposed the idea of electron shells and energy levels. He explained the absorption and emission of radiation by atoms as a change in electron energy, further demonstrating that electrons occupied discrete energy levels. For this work he was awarded the 1922 Nobel Prize for Physics. He worked on the US atom bomb project during World War Two,and in common with many physicists spent later years campaigning for the peaceful use of the atom | |
