The biochemist Dr. Sydney Brenner, born in South Africa on March 13th 1927,in his office at the Medical Research Council's Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge,UK. Having won a university scholarship by the time he was 15,Brenner rapidly gained qualifications in both medicine & biology and began research in molecular biology at Cambridge. Since 1963 he has been making an in- depth study of the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans. A world-wide project to decode the genome, the genetic blueprint,of this simple multicellular animal (essentially as a dry run to a similar project involving the human genome) has come about largely due to his efforts | |
