Georgius Agricola. Engraving of the German mineralogist Georgius Agricola (1494-1555),also known as Georg Bauer at work. He lived as a physician in some of the small mining towns of Saxony. His book,De re metallica (On the Subject of Metals),published in 1556,was clearly written & heavily illustrated,and summarised all the practical knowledge acquired by the Saxon miners of the day. It is regarded as the first text on mineralogy & Agricola as the father of mineralogy.
