Thomas Addison. Portrait of Thomas Addison (1793- 1860),British physician and a founder of endocrinology. In 1855 Addison described two new illnesses, pernicious anaemia and another anaemia called Addison's disease. He found that the victims of Addison's disease showed changes in 'capsules' above the kidney. The disease was the first to be attributed to failure of the endocrine system (ductless internal glands). Studies by others showed that these 'capsules' were adrenal glands responsible for producing a complex group of hormones. Addison described appendicitis and lobar pneumonia; he also wrote papers on tuberculosis and the anatomy of the lung | |
