Armbruster and Hofmann. Composite image of Peter Armbruster (left) & Sigurd Hofmann,German discov- erers of new chemical elements, watching 2 atomic nuclei collide to make a heavy element. Armbruster leads a group at the Heavy Ion Research (GSI) centre in Darmstadt,Germany, which created the 6 heaviest-known elements (107 to 112) during 1981- 96. Hofmann leads the Separator for Heavy Ion reaction Products (SHIP) programme at GSI. The elements are made by colliding high-speed nuclei together using the UNILAC accelerator. The SHIP separates the collision products & passes them to a detector. This work allows studies of the forces that bind nuclei together. Photographed in 1997 | |
