Art forgery detection. Technician using a binocular optical microscope to examine a forged painting. This is a copy of a painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553). The microscope increases the amount of detail that can be seen,allowing areas of retouched paint to be found. By examining paintings through a microscope under ultraviolet or infra-red light,other features normally invisible to human eyes can also be revealed. This work is being carried out at the Doerner Institute in Munich,Germany,which is headed by Dr Andreas Burmester.
