Egyptian cotton fibres, light micrograph. Cotton is a soft wool-like fibre that grows around the seeds of the cotton plant (Gossypium barbadense),which is native to Peru. The bolls consist of many layers of cellulose (plant fibre) coiled up into natural springs, which are ideal for spinning as they remain interlocked even when flattened out into long strands. This cotton differs from other cotton in that it has much longer and more silky fibres. Differential interference contrast. Magnification: x75 when printed 10cm wide | |
