Vacuum-packaged food. Assorted food items which have been vacuum-packed to preserve them. The food includes ,bacon, sausages, cheese and coffee (top left). Vacuum packaging involves placing the food in a plastic bag, extracting the air and then sealing the bag. The lack of air within the packaging inhibits the activity of bacteria and fungi, whilst the seal prevents new contaminants reaching the food. Vacuum-packaging is much lighter than alternative methods, such as placing the food in tins | |
