Vitamins. Abstract photograph showing some foods which are rich in vitamins. Seen here are fish (Vitamins A and D),oranges (Vitamin C) and lettuce (Vitamin E). The importance of vitamins was first studied by Sir F. Gowland Hopkins at Trinity College,Cambridge. In a series of classic experiments,he showed that rats fed on a mixture of pure protein, carbohydrate, fats, salt and water didn't grow, but rats who had a small amount of milk added to the diet flourished. Hopkins deduced that the milk carried "accessory food factors" - now called vitamins | |
