False-colour scanning electron micrograph of crystals of pure saccharin crystalised from water. The substance was obtained from Saxin, the brand name of an artificial sweetner contaning soluable saccharin. Soluable saccharin is the sodium salt of saccharin (2,3-dihydro-3-oxobenzisosulfonazole,chemical name). In dilute solution it has a sweet taste, some 300-500 times sweeter than sugar. Its taste is detectable at a dilution of one part in 100,000. It is used as a non-fattening sweetner. Magnification: x70 at 6x4.5cm size | |
